First book you ever read

Can you remember the first "real book" you read? (That means no "Golden books!") Someone in my family gave me "Little Women" when I was 10, and I still have it; I love it. I also read "The Secret Garden," by Frances Hodgen Burnett, but I think I must have been 8, because my father's inscription to me is dated 1972, which would have been my 8th year. Still have that one, too!

What a great question. I think it was The Adventures of Prickley Porky by Thornton Burgess. I was so young and didn't know it was a novel, so started reading in the middle, random chapters, wondered why it didn't make sense. When I visited Brewster Massachusetts years later with my kids, I visited his house. Not a great book or series, but memorable as a first. Care to share other book tips? Suzanne

Memories keep coming forever on first book I ever read. The book is titled; 'No Bail For The Judge' by Henry Cecil. I got it from my dads library as a young lad and since after reading the book, I have always been with the notion; that what might look right and correct, given circunstancial evidences, might not be so in reality. But someone must be convinced about it and work hard for reality to emerge.I wish you read that little book, dear Single...1979.

"Sounder" by William Armstrong, when I was probably around nine. Still such a great story.

Yes, come to think of it, I think I was 9 or 10, can`t really say for certain. But it was given to me by a friend, the tittle of the novel was JUJU ROCK. I can`t remember the author, but can sure say that it was a most interesting piece of work. It had an African setting, with an ocult undertone.There was a young guy who was central to all the events that took place in the novel-meet Kofi. A boy of 12, who stumbled accidentally and quite innocentlly, into a dark initiation ceremony of a well feared ocult...to be continued

It would have been 1984. Orwell advanced one theory I thought was really interesting: that each person is so afraid of some particular thing that he will do what is most repulsive to him to avoid the thing. It's not an especially novel idea; just common sense, I suppose. But I'd never had it presented to me before. (That's perhaps not such a great surprise, since I was just 15. The first real book that really gave me a great deal to think about was Pascal's Pensees, which I read years later.)

the first real book I ever read I dont remember the title or the author but it was about freddy the pig. Also there was a rat called Ezra that was Freddy's enemy. I think I read it over and over.
